Dozens of Stages Across Bulgaria Bring Financial Literacy to Life with “The Money Carousel”

With the start of Global Money Week, taking place on 16–22 March 2026, performances of the educational theatre production “The Money Carousel” are beginning across dozens of locations throughout the country. Schools, community centres (chitalishta), and libraries are turning into stages where children present lessons about money and life through theatre. These performances bring together students, parents, and members of the local community around the topic of financial literacy.

Information on where and when the performances take place is available in the calendar on the initiative’s website: www.finansovogramoten.bg. At present, the calendar includes nearly 100 events, and the list continues to be updated. In some schools, two or even three performances are scheduled to allow more students and guests to take part in the initiative.

The performances are part of the national initiative “Let’s Turn the Money Carousel – Together!”, organised by Financial Literacy Initiative Foundation and Education 5.0 Foundation. Through this initiative, Bulgaria takes part in Global Money Week, an international campaign led by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) that promotes financial literacy among children and young people. With “The Money Carousel”, Bulgaria showcases a unique format—financial literacy comes to life on stage through performances in which children themselves are the actors, presenting to their own communities.

Registration for participation opened at the end of January, and interest has exceeded expectations. More than 180 schools, community centres, libraries, and other organisations from over 100 locations across the country have signed up. In preparation for the performances, teachers share that children eagerly take on their roles, prepare stage elements, and rehearse their lines. Parents, finance professionals, and other members of the local community are also actively involved. In this way, “The Money Carousel” brings together students, teachers, parents, and community members around a shared cause—financial literacy.

The educational theatre “The Money Carousel” uses approaches such as experiential learning, dramatisation, and role play. Through stage situations, children explore key aspects of financial life—needs versus wants, the family budget, and responsibility in financial decision-making. With the support of their teachers, they become true performers, while the school, community centre, or library becomes a stage where knowledge is transformed into experience.

The initiative “Let’s Turn the Money Carousel – Together!” is held with the official support of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Bulgaria. It is also supported by the Financial Supervision Commission, the Bulgarian Stock Exchange – Sofia, and all major industry associations in the financial sector: the Association of Banks in Bulgaria (ABB), the Association of Bulgarian Insurers (ABZ), the Bulgarian Association of Asset Management Companies (BAAMC), the Bulgarian Association of Supplementary Pension Security Companies (BASPSC), the Bulgarian Association of Licensed Investment Intermediaries (BALII), the Bulgarian Fintech Association, and Global Libraries – Bulgaria Foundation.
