Project “Financial Literacy in Public Libraries”

The Financial Literacy Initiative Foundation (FLI) is an expert partner of the Global Libraries – Bulgaria Foundation in the international project “Financial Literacy in Public Libraries”, funded under the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Commission. The project’s main goal is to increase the level of financial literacy among adults by using an innovative approach and harnessing the significant potential of public libraries as centers for non-formal education and lifelong learning.

Through the project, librarians are supported in building competencies and skills to develop the financial literacy of older library users. As a result, comprehensive educational modules have been created, including a training course for librarian-educators, as well as financial literacy courses for library users, with practical advice and educational materials available online.

This project is part of a longer-term strategy to improve the level of financial literacy among adults in Bulgaria, Poland, Romania, and Slovenia. The development of an open training program for adult educators and adult library users, together with the use of the potential of extensive public library networks, and the successful implementation of the project, will have a long-term impact on the development of financial education not only in the target countries, but also at a regional and European level.

In developing the educational modules, the specific context of each partner country was taken into account. Various aspects of practices and policies in the field of financial education in Bulgaria, Poland, Romania, and Slovenia were analyzed. The analysis of the state of adult financial education is presented in a “Mapping Report”, developed in 2020 by the four partners in the FINLIT project, based on surveys conducted among librarians in these countries, with the aim of adapting the educational model as closely as possible to existing needs.

A financial education model has been developed on the basis of which library staff can deliver financial education to adult library users in their local communities. The project offers libraries open and free online courses for both librarians and library users on the platform finlit.eu. Through these courses, library staff can be trained as financial literacy facilitators, while library users can improve their financial knowledge in order to make informed use of financial services products, especially online. Libraries will also be able to expand their adult education offerings with courses in personal finance. All necessary materials are available on the project’s educational platform finlit.eu (after logging into the system).
