Program “Innovative Approaches to Building Key Competencies in the Field of Financial and Civic Education”
I. Program Description
The program is designed for teachers at the lower secondary and upper secondary levels of school education.
It presents innovative approaches, materials, and tools for building key competencies in students—financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and initiative—as part of their personal development and the formation of civic competencies. At the same time, it supports the development of a broad range of key competencies among students, including entrepreneurial, social and civic, mathematical, language, and cultural competencies. The program fosters critical thinking, skills for searching and analyzing information, digital skills, teamwork skills, presentation skills, communication skills, and creativity.
Training under the program supports teachers in two main directions. First, it enhances their personal financial literacy, thereby providing them with the knowledge and confidence to teach their students in a high-quality and competent manner. Second, teachers become familiar with the proposed innovative approaches and tools and develop skills to apply them, including through piloting these approaches during the training.
The program focuses on developing practical knowledge and skills in personal finance management among students, enabling them to make rational financial and life decisions and to cope more effectively with the challenges of the modern world. It presents key aspects of personal finance management such as goal setting, financial planning and budgeting, the use of borrowed funds, investing, risk management and insurance, and pension provision. In addition, it addresses topics traditionally viewed as outside the field of finance but in fact directly related to it and to quality of life, including the choice of further education, career guidance, entering the labor market, working and traveling abroad, interpersonal relationships, and the role and place of the individual in the community.
The delivery of knowledge and skills is based on the pedagogical approaches “Learning through Experience” and “Learning through Play.” Simulations and games are a teaching and learning strategy in which students actively participate in decision-making. Through them, interaction between theory and practice is achieved. They are a highly effective motivational tool, as they demonstrate the importance of knowledge for making sound decisions. Through situational tasks in the form of workshops, learning is brought as close as possible to real life and to people’s practical activities. During the training, a series of financial workshop-games will be presented that teachers can use in their work. The acquisition of new knowledge and skills is further supported by additional tools that are introduced to teachers.
Teacher training includes both theoretical preparation and practical activities: through demonstrations and participation in activities—financial workshops—as well as through familiarization with educational video series and the piloting of online educational tests.
